Swiggy is preparing for a major technological leap as it rolls out a large-scale AI-powered upgrade across its platform. The Indian food and quick commerce giant announced that users will soon be able to order food, book restaurant tables, and track deliveries using AI chatbots, significantly simplifying how people interact with its services.
At the heart of this transformation is Swiggy’s integration of the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a framework that allows its systems to securely communicate with leading AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude. By adopting MCP across all its services, Swiggy aims to enable users to complete everyday tasks using natural language prompts, rather than navigating through multiple app screens and menus.
AI Chatbots Across Swiggy’s Core Services
Swiggy confirmed that MCP integration will be available across its major verticals, including:
- Food delivery
- Instamart grocery delivery
- Dineout restaurant reservations
This update means users can interact with Swiggy directly through AI-enabled chat platforms to place orders, book tables, and check delivery status. In a notable industry first, Swiggy stated that Instamart has become the world’s first quick commerce platform to support MCP, setting a new benchmark for AI-driven commerce.
How AI-Powered Ordering Works
Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol allows AI agents to securely connect with third-party platforms and take real actions on behalf of users. Through this integration, AI chatbots will be able to perform a wide range of tasks that previously required manual input within the app.
Using conversational commands, users can now:
- Search for restaurants or grocery items
- Compare available options
- Build and modify shopping carts
- Apply discounts, offers, and coupons
- Collect and confirm delivery addresses
- Place orders and track deliveries in real time
Swiggy revealed that its AI agents can browse and purchase from more than 40,000 SKUs using simple text prompts. For example, a user could say, “Order the ingredients I need to make Thai green curry,” or “Order me a highly rated biryani that I would enjoy,” and the AI would handle the entire process from selection to checkout.
This approach removes much of the friction traditionally associated with online ordering, making the experience faster, more intuitive, and more personalized.
Dining Reservations Made Simpler
The AI integration also extends to Dineout, Swiggy’s restaurant discovery and reservation platform. Through a single conversational command, users will be able to:
- Retrieve available booking slots
- Select restaurants based on preferences
- Apply relevant discounts
- Confirm table reservations instantly
By eliminating the need to switch between multiple menus and booking screens, Swiggy aims to streamline dining reservations and reduce the time spent planning outings.
Swiggy’s Vision for AI-Driven Commerce
According to Madhusudhan Rao, Chief Technology Officer at Swiggy, the MCP integration reflects the company’s broader vision of convenience in the Indian context. In an interview, Rao explained that true convenience is shaped by personal habits, daily routines, and time constraints.
Swiggy believes that MCP will significantly reduce decision-making friction by allowing AI systems to understand user intent more clearly and act accordingly. The company expects this shift to make on-demand services not only faster but also more personalized and efficient.
As AI continues to reshape digital commerce, Swiggy’s move positions it at the forefront of conversational, AI-led experiences. By allowing users to interact naturally with its platform through chatbots, Swiggy is redefining how food ordering, grocery shopping, and dining reservations will work in the years ahead.
