OpenAI Launches ‘Chats for Students in India’ to Empower College Learning with AI

OpenAI has announced a new education-focused initiative called “Chats for Students in India”, designed to help college students make the most of ChatGPT for studying, skill-building, and managing campus life. Launched on October 27, the program includes over 50 real-world prompts inspired by how students from leading Indian institutions such as IIT Madras, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), and Delhi Technical Campus already use ChatGPT every day.

This initiative follows the recent India launch of ChatGPT’s Study Mode, reinforcing OpenAI’s growing focus on education and accessibility in one of its largest global markets. According to Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends Report 2025, India now accounts for 13.5% of all global ChatGPT mobile users, the highest share worldwide.

“ChatGPT is now one of the largest learning platforms on the planet. Over 50% of our users in India are under 24, so students form a major audience,” said Leah Belsky, VP of Education at OpenAI.

Helping Students Learn, Build Skills, and Plan Careers

The ‘Chats for Students in India’ hub organizes its prompts around key student needs such as:

  • Exam preparation
  • Class projects
  • Skill development
  • Decision-making
  • Career exploration

Each prompt launches directly inside ChatGPT, offering a one-click start for students to receive personalized, real-time guidance. This makes the experience seamless — whether learners are revising for exams, exploring new career paths, or improving study habits.

Highlights from the Top Prompts

Among the most popular examples shared by OpenAI are:

  • Plan your career path: “Help me land a software engineering internship at Surfline with milestones and checklists.”
  • Understand course materials: “Talk through my notes like a study buddy.” (Supports file uploads)
  • Create a study guide: “Make me a study guide for my exam in [course].”
  • Turn ideas into prototypes: “Define a proof of concept like a top 1% developer.”
  • Schedule smarter: “Create a spaced-repetition study plan using my timeframe.”

These examples show how ChatGPT can function as a personal tutor, productivity coach, and project assistant — all in one tool.

Free and Accessible to Every Student

One of the key aspects of this initiative is accessibility. The platform remains free for all ChatGPT users in India, even for those who don’t subscribe to the Plus plan. Students can use it to improve their learning routines, plan their career growth, enhance productivity, and even manage daily hostel life hacks — all through an intuitive chat interface.

With “Chats for Students in India,” OpenAI is taking another major step in transforming how students learn and interact with AI. As India continues to lead global usage of ChatGPT, this program could redefine digital education and student empowerment for millions across the country.
